Sensitivity Study for the Derivation of Aerosol Height Using the O2A Band and First Applications to GOSAT

We present results of our synthetic aerosol vertical structure retrieval using simulations of high spectral resolved top of atmosphere radiances in the O2A band. The vertical structure is assumed to be lognormal. The retrieval is based on the direct inversion of the radiative transfer model MOMO. The retrieval was tested for various spectral resolutions and noise levels and and probability density functions for the retrieval for various scenes were analyzed. Results are presented for different aerosol models including single scattering albedo, optical thicknesses, and surface reflectance spectra. Presented is the impact of neglecting polarization and also first applications of the developed scheme to GOSAT measurements made by the TANSO-FTS instrument.
