Performance of COSMO-SkyMed Split Bandwidth Interferometry for the Measurement of Co-Seismic Displacement

In this work we investigate the performance of Split Bandwidth Interferometry (SBI) applied to the X-band sensors of the COSMO-SkyMed constellation. In azimuth this technique is also known as Multi Aperture Interferometry (MAI).
For high-resolution sensors these techniques are particularly appealing, both as individual measurement techniques, since good accuracies can be achieved with large averaging windows still maintaining a useful spatial resolution for subsequent geophysical modeling, as well as in support of DInSAR processing, where they can be exploited to aid co-registration and phase unwrapping.
Furthermore, for co-seismic measurements, MAI provides a sensitivity to north-south displacements, thus complementing classical DInSAR methods in this respect, and should therefore always be applied when the data properties allow it and a significant motion component in this direction cannot be excluded. The expected theoretical performance of the methods is reviewed and compared to the results obtained on several co-seismic test-cases, using a processing chain implemented within the ASI-INGV MuSA project (Use of multiband satellite SAR data for the study of crustal deformation related to the seismic cycle).
