The Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer, SLSTR, has been designed to continue the record of surface temperature measurements from the ATSR series. The instrument design maintains the observing capabilities of ATSR but with an increased swath width to provide daily coverage and additional channels for improved cloud and fire detection. The authors present the expected radiometric, optical and spectral response properties based on an analysis of the characterisation measurements of the optical components. To ensure traceability of the in-flight measurements and to demonstrate the performance of SLSTR, a thorough pre-launch calibration campaign will be conducted. The paper will describe the test plans and the purpose built test facility
